Starting the trip

An experience so great, I had to go twice. My first encounter with these vast landscapes came in the form of a 3 day layover which only gave me the time to check out the capital city and book a tour to view one of the countless waterfalls. You read about places, you see what they look like, but Iceland is the only places that needs to be felt. Both in heart...and your wallet.
A few years back, I was browsing for flights from Montreal to Paris, when I stumbled upon a pretty good deal. A 1 stop flight with a five-hour layover in Reykjavik. Since I wasn't in a rush, I impulsively stretched those 5 hours into three days - an unplanned detour into a city I could barely pronounce.

Iceland, in my mind, was nothing more than a frostbitten corner of the world, until I discovered its wallet-draining abilities. Yet, this costly encounter only sharpened my appetite for its raw and beautiful landscapes.

Two years later, I would get the opportunity to revisit. Only this time, I would have 10 days at my disposal. Armed with a rental car, my carry on filled with food and wine, and a couple of fearless comrades, we set out to loop the entire country.

Driving down the ring road

Unlike my first stint at exploring this lonely contry, I came equipped with two friends, an entire suitcase full of food from Montreal, wine bottles and warm clothing. I had previously forced myself to learn manual for my upcoming rental car...which ended up being an automatic (to the sigh of relief from my friend). And so after landing at an ungodly hour of the morning, we got into our rental car and took the road right away, trying to make the most of our 9 day journey!
.. towards the south!
Our small Kia Rio doing it's thing, acting as both a car and a tent.
And thankfully sipping very modestly on gas.

Talk about the changing wheather

One great thing about Iceland is that it has a road that perfectly circles out the entire country. Thanks to this, you get to experience all of its moods. We had almost t-shirt sunny kind of areas whilst fast forward 2 days later and where layered up with the entire content of our suitcase in order to make it to the top of a crater. When I said that it's the kind of place that makes you feel, I meant it.
